Pontardawe and Swansea Angling Society Ltd, a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee, was formed in October 2008 to take over the activities of the two unincorporated associations Pontardawe and Swansea Angling Society and Tawe Disabled Fishers Association. Those two former associations have now dissolved.

The Pontardawe and Swansea Angling Society (PASAS) started life in 1946 and was initially known as the Pontardawe Angling Society. The name was changed to Pontardawe and District Angling Society in 1953 and then to Pontardawe and Swansea Angling Society in 1984 to reflect the areas where members lived and the waters controlled by the club.

The Tawe Disabled Fishers Association (TDFA) was formed in 1976 to encourage and motivate handicapped persons to go fishing.

The two associations have worked closely together since the 1980s and, when incorporation was decided upon by PASAS, it made sense for the two bodies to come together as one. The identity of Tawe Disabled Fishers is preserved by its operating as a sub-committee of the company, where the assets it brought with it continue to be used for activities of the kind formerly undertaken by TDFA. All members of PASAS and of TDFA automatically became members of the new organisation upon its formation.

Although a limited company, the organisation is run just like an ordinary members’ club with members appointing a management committee, officers and directors at the AGM.

We have about 170 members (about 140 adult and 30 junior). At the AGM in December each year the members appoint a Management Committee, Officers and Directors. The Management Committee meets monthly.

Officers and committee…

Memorandum and Articles of Association… These are the documents setting out the objects of the organisation and its method of operating. They take the place of the constitutions of the former associations.

Byelaws… These supplement the Memorandum and Articles of Association. They set out membership categories and subscriptions, conditions of membership, fishing rules, etc, and can be changed fairly easily at the AGM.

50 Years!… A magazine produced in 1996 to mark the 50th anniversary of the club’s formation in 1946

A Brief History of Fisheries in the River Tawe and Swansea Bay… An article by our current Secretary and Life President, Ray Lockyer.
